What are your customers searching on your site?

Recently Your Turn team has implement a few smart systems to help one of our bigger clients find out what people are searching and what they are clicking on once they have searched.

The Question of the week is "What are your customers searching on your site?" Do you know? When running an E Commerce website, this is very important, as it will give you a clear indication on what your potential customers are trying to find, and what products are popular.

If you want to implement your own, the first step is to develop a system that records data around searching on your website, then link this data to what products were clicked on, and also record if no products were clicked on at all. Once you have developed this system, in your admin, develop a system to tabulate the data grouping search terms and ordering by date or most popular searches.

Once your new system is in place, analyse the data, take note of what products are being clicked on, and give these products preference in your search. If there is a popular search term with no products as a result, either update your search query or source the products that will match the term being searched. If there is a search with products showing and no clicks, then figure out if the right products are coming up, and make adjustments to display the right products. If the search term is miss spelt, update your search system to correct the spelling. For example, visitors may search "aligator", so your system needs to be smart enough to find "alligator" instead of "aligator".
